Last week I directed some spots for the most excellent site gamefly.com (I have been a customer since they launched — think netflix for games). We shot with the Viper FilmStream™ camera, recording directly to HDCAMSR tape.

The Viper shoots 10-bit log, uncompressed 4:4:4 1920x1080 24p. In other words, word. It's not ideal to shoot to tape, as even SR has some subsampling. But we have an SR deck and, hey, it's a TV commercial.

Forgive my lack of knowledge about such things; but is Viper filmstream roughly analogous to the RAW format in stills photography? Obviously it doesn't have the user-friendly front end, but my point is more that RAW has been a decisive factor in many stills photographers making the switch. Can you see filmstream presenting a more attractive alternative to film?
It's kinda like that. Raw files from a DSLR are truly raw and unprocessed, and cannot even be viewed without some subjective processing. The Viper's output is internally converted from 12bit linear (in the true, ProLost approved sense of the term!) to 10bit log before output, and is direct viewable.
