Big iPhone, Little Camera

September 10, 2014

Speaking of the Fujifilm X100T, here's one way I've been thinking about the sizes of the new iPhones announced yesterday (with the help of this printable size comparison PDF from Ars Technica).

To say that any phone could be a subsitute for an APSC, F2 monster like the X100S or T would be ludicrous. As would be to claim that I never leave my big cameras behind knowing that my phone is often enough.

Both iPhone 6 models feature the same 8-megapixel camera with phase-detect autofocus and ƒ/2.2 lens. The iPhone 6+ adds optical image stabilization.

It's a gigantic phone. But it's also a paper-thin camera with a gigantic rear LCD.

I'm going big. I mean, small.

Fujifilm X100T

September 09, 2014

I love my X100S. Today, Fuji announced its successor, the X100T. Here's a great write-up on it by Zack Arias of dedpxl.com.

The X100 series is STILL my desert island camera. I’m so happy they haven’t screwed it up. It still has soul and that — is what makes a Fuji a Fuji.

If you vignette the living crap out of a product comparison shot, we can be friends.

If you vignette the living crap out of a product comparison shot, we can be friends.

What I find most intersting about Zack's impression is his (backed up by gorgeous shots) love for Fuji's "Classic Chrome" film emulation, which I first heard about in Fuji's recently-announced X30, a more affordable X-camera with an impressive zoom lens, but a smaller sensor.

For a more clinical look at the X100T, here's dpreview's take.

The X100T is said to ship in November, and is available for preorder on Amazon and B&H.

Meet the New Blog, Same as the Old Blog

September 09, 2014

I believe in blogging.

Though it’s hard to argue with this:

Most books should be magazine articles. Most articles should be blog posts. Most posts should be tweets. Most people shouldn't tweet.

— Jimmy Guterman (@jimmyguterman) April 4, 2013

…I agree even more with this by Brent Simmons:

My blog’s older than Twitter and Facebook, and it will outlive them. It has seen Flickr explode and then fade. It’s seen Google Wave and Google Reader come and go, and it’ll still be here as Google Plus fades. When Medium and Tumblr are gone, my blog will be here.

I believe in having my own spot on the internet that I own and control. Twitter is great, but it seems its owners are determined to wreck it. Facebook, obviously, is evil. Tumblr and even Google+ are fine. But these are all companies that want you to pour your “content”[1] into their systems, so that they can re-sell it. That bugs me. When I write online, I want to be the customer, not the product. So I pay a very modest amount of money to Squarespace to host this blog. When I first switched to Squarespace from blogger in 2009, the idea of paying someone to host my blog seemed crazy. Now, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

As great as Squarespace is, the process of migrating the sprawl of this site to their new version 6 platform was never going to be easy. Part of the reason the Prolost Store is at stumaschwitz.com is that it was easier to start a new Squarespace 6 site (in order to take advantage of their excellent e-commerce platform) than to move Prolost there.

But running stumaschwitz.com as well as slugline.co and now prolostvintage.com all in Squarespace 6 gave me too much of a daily reminder how much better the experience is—both for me, the blogger, and for you, the reader. So I bit the bullet and made the move.

This change provided me the opportunity to modernize the look of the site. I’ve tried to make it more readable, while still providing clear navigation. One new thing I like is the featured posts page, where I can easily manage a collection of posts worth checking out if you missed them, or want a second look.

Comments are now simpler, requiring no login. But my comment policy has not changed.

As with the previous migration, I’m sure some things will break. Please let me know if you see a broken link, a missing image, or just something you think could be better.

  1. I despise this word, but value it as a canary for detecting evil. If someone refers to what you make as content, it’s a sure sign that they value the bucket more than what goes into it. Imagine a restaurant that served “plate content.” Ugh.  ↩

Prolost Light Leaks for Lightroom

August 26, 2014

Given how much fun I’ve been having with the Prolost Bespoke Vintage Presets, it was only a matter of time before I tackled something I’d always wanted to figure out—randomly-generated light leaks for Lightroom.

Super fun. Available now.

Prolost Bespoke Vintage Presets for Lightroom

August 15, 2014

This is a fun one.

I’ve been playing with a faded, vintage look in Lightroom. With this kind of treatment, it’s often rewarding to allow yourself to be surprised by new combinations of settings, rather than building up the look manually each time. So I built a system for generating an infinitely varying collection of faded vintage presets, and I have been having a blast with the results. It’s almost like Plastic Bullet for Lightroom.

It occurred to me that I could share these settings in a unique way, hence Prolost Bespoke Vintage Presets. That’s right, bespoke. I make each numbered set to order, according to your preferences, and with your monogram baked into the names.

Your presets are unique to you. No one else will have exactly your looks.

The Prolost Bespoke Vintage Presets are available in three quantities: 100, 200, and 300. Learn more here, or buy now at the Prolost Store.
